The Santimamiñe Cave, on the southern mountainside of Mount Ereñozar, is the most important archaeological site in Bilbao Bizkaia. It preserves the remains of human settlements dating back more than 14,000 years. Its interior has almost fifty cave paintings of animals such as bisons, horses, bears and deer and even stalactite and stalagmite formations.
It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The cave is closed for excavations and to preserve the paintings. However, you can discover the inside of the cave with a realistic 3D guided tour.
